So we went to see the Ansel Adams exhibit today. It was focused mainly on his water photographs. Shockingly (to me) it made me feel better about my work. There were phenomenal images to be sure, but there were also images that didn’t wow me. Kind of like falling in love with REM and then hearing “Stand”.
Okay, his sense of composition is amazing. And he didn’t have access to Photoshop (!), just film and an enlarger. I noticed he liked to exaggerate his contrast for a more dramatic look (something I’ll have to try out). And shooting at f64? My lenses don’t even go there. Between that and film, no wonder he could enlarge to 3’x5’ (gasp) and still have crisp images. But it made me feel better. Like I can get there.
Oh, and I need to get to Yosemite. For a month. Or two.
Two of my favorites from today…Maroon Bells and Mono Lake.

PS - Best part of the day? 5yo and 7yo walking around the museum with notebooks trying to draw all of their favorite Ansel Adams pictures.
